Summary
Show that you can communicate using different methods and experiment with the chemistry of colourful flame tests and redox reactions as you turn copper into silver and gold.
Narrative
First Contact is about observing an alien civilisation to ascertain their capabilities and communication methods and if deemed appropriate contacting them to share knowledge about the Federation and learn from their expertise. Making first contact with a new civilisation is one of the most dangerous Starfleet objectives due to the infinite unknown possible outcomes. In order to succeed you will need to show respect and diplomacy, desirable skills and attributes for both Starfleet Officers and Scouting members. Building these skills makes for good leaders and good galactic citizens. If you succeed in your Mission both you and the Federation will be richer for the experience gained.
Mission Outcomes
By completing this activity, you can show your Unit Council that you can:
STEM | Chemistry:
- Follow instructions to perform a series of chemical reactions.
- Learn how and why different chemicals respond differently when exposed to fire.
- Interpret information from the periodic table.
Communication:
- Use basic AUSLAN alphabet symbols to communicate.
- Decipher coded clues to access resources.
- Maintain a respectful and positive approach to diplomatic relations to engage in trade.
- Interpret images to establish a storyline and learn new communication methods.

Complete any pre-work that might help you to complete the Mission, such as practicing using maps and radios, or doing research into particular concepts that missions mention that you may not be familiar with, or any other technologies or concepts you are curious about that might help you find success.
