Raw materials are costly to produce and can be hard to come by. Where possible, reusing items can be more efficient than creating something from scratch. Learn about different ways to create items by making something new out of something used.
Chief O'Brien has been up to his elbows in repairs on space station Deep Space 9. All the matter-energy replicators have been going offline intermittently, so no one is able to create the raw materials they need. Starfleet Recruits are required to have basic material refining skills, so O'Brien has ordered all Starfleet personnel to start recycling their materials themselves, instead of returning the items to the matter reclamation facilities. Hopefully, this will reduce the demand for replicators, allowing O'Brien the time to complete repairs and get a good night's sleep too.
